Silent in the Morning

Finding your voice is a hard, but necessary step on life’s path. I’m talking specifically about one’s voice as a teacher, but (as usual) our yoga experience is but a microcosm and this of course is perhaps universally true.
When we are just beginning to teach, it makes sense that the words chosen would mirror those of our own teachers. And I think that honoring the historic, collective wisdom imbedded in our very cells should not be discounted. However, there is a time when everyone must find one’s own words. You must find your own voice.

Why?

Although we are all more alike than not and although we are all one great big pulsating organism, your students/friends/colleagues want to know your unique experience, your unique expression of this life. At some point, to avoid or delay this growth will start to alienate people. You will sound like a robot. And although some people think they like or need the robot, you really aren’t serving them (or your own practice) if you continue on this way. It’s true that you might alienate people (or at least not attract every single person) when you speak from your heart, but you will connect more honestly, more deeply with the folks who are intended to hear your message. And then you will get to hear all of those messages you. are. meant. to hear.

What message do you need people to hear?

LOVE, kelly
